Duncansby Head

Duncansby Head is the most northeasterly point of mainland Britain. It lies just 2 miles further east from John O’Groats - and makes for a much more interesting North Coast 500 stop, so don’t miss it!

At Duncansby Head, you can find a lighthouse (though not as visually striking as others around Scotland), as well as a nice coastal walk lined with some really cool rock formations (Duncansby Stacks, Geo of Sclaites).

One mistake you could make is arrive at the location and think it is just another edge-of-the-world cliffside with a lighthouse. It isn’t obvious that there is more to this landmark, as the sea stacks are not visible from the parking area. But head down the path facing south and the rocks will shortly reveal themselves in the distance. These two pyramid-shaped pinacles are a spectacular sight and a great photo opportunity from this angle.

On the way there, you will also walk past Geo of Sclaites on your left, a deep crevice in the face of the cliff, which, during the summer season, is bursting with birdlife.
