Fossá

Waterfall Waterfall

Fossá means waterfall in Faroese, so this majestic waterfall is called just that.

Fossá is the largest, tallest, and most spectacular waterfall in the Faroe Islands. It falls over the face of the mountain in two sections, over a total vertical drop of 140m. The waterfall’s appearance (its debit, width and direction) can vary widely depending on the weather, rain and wind. It looks its best following heavy rain when it’s most powerful.

Getting there

The waterfall is located in the north of Streymoy island, right on the main road leading to Haldarsvík and then Tjørnuvík. Parking is available just after the bridge, but note that it’s quite limited.

Hiking to the upper section

You can see the waterfall quite well as you drive by in your car, but you can get really close to that lower section if you make a stop. You can also hike up to the upper section - this bit is wider and taller, and you don’t get to see much of it from the base.

The trail starts 150m after the parking lot, to the left where there is an opening in the mountain side, up, and then back along the path. This trail is not marked on Google Maps, but you can visualise the route using satellite view, and I think there is a sign on location showing the path. It’s quite straight-forward. I’ve also marked it on my map .

View from Eysturoy

The best view of Fossá is not from the main road, but from the island of Eysturoy, directly across the water. From there, you can see the dramatic waterfall in its entirely - it’s a nice angle for photography. This point lies just 1km away from the Fossá, and yet it’s a 12km drive to it - welcome to the Faroe Islands!
