Hvíthamar

Hvíthamar is a mountain ridge in the very north of Eysturoy island, between the villages of Funningur and Gjógv. This is where you will find one of the most beautiful views in Faroe Islands.

Getting there

It’s actually very easy to reach the viewpoint. The most difficult part is figuring out where it is exactly. The viewpoint isn’t marked on Google Maps, there is no clear path to it, and last time I tried searching for Hvíthamar, it pointed me to another island altogether.

The closest settlement to this mountain is Funningur, which is why you might find the viewpoint referred to online by that name. The start of the trail is simply the highest point on the road between Funningur and Gjógv - after you climbed the hill, and before you start to go down the other side. If you plan on seeing Gjógv, you will inevitably pass by. As you cross the cattle grid following an S curve, there is some space to the right to accommodate a few cars. You can visualise this well using Satellite view and Street View. I’ve also marked the location on my map of Faroe Islands.

From the parking place, just follow the fence up until you reach the top - it takes around 10-15 mins.

The view

At the top, you are treated to a splendid view of Funningsfjørður Fjord to the SE as well as the mountain ridge on Kalsoy to the NE. There is a high chance you will have this view all to yourself.
